Dimitri Mavrikos and his two brothers, Steve and George, came to Victoria from Vancouver with the dream of opening their own restaurant. Their goal was to open a restaurant that not only offered excellent food but great service and a fun casual atmosphere as well. They wanted a place that felt like home and in the summer of 1974 Romeo's Place was created.
The primary focus was signature pizza and pasta from recipes and techniques that had been passed down to the family. It was these staples that would create a name for the new restaurant and helped create a passionate local following. The menus also included a variety of popular local dishes such as: steaks, chicken & veal, burgers & salads, as well as other original dishes from their homeland, Greece. Delivery and takeout also proved to be an extremely popular option as the local market responded enthusiastically.
The first Romeo's opened on Hillside Avenue and was warmly embraced by the people of Victoria. It was an instant success and very shortly after a second location was opened downtown on Johnson Street. This location would prove to be popular for lunch and dinner and is still remembered fondly for the fun filled late night meals and crowds. In the years that followed the Mavrikos brothers branched out and opened more locations on Vancouver Island by adhering to the same philosophy that had brought them success in the beginning. With the help of their growing young families and new franchisees Nick & Chris Kamaretsos, the company grew into where it is today.
There are currently five Romeo's locations on Vancouver Island and the family is honoured and blessed to be celebrating 40 years in the restaurant industry. We continue to pride ourselves on offering great food and service at a reasonable price. Our pizza and pasta recipes continue to stand the test of time and have garnered many awards and accolades over the years. We strive to continuously satisfy our loyal and discerning customers with the same great taste they've come to love and truly offer something for everyone.
It is also an exciting time for the Romeo's family as we transition into the next chapter by opening up new and remodelled locations. In April of 2012, we returned to the downtown core with our location on the corner of Blanshard & Fisgard, this is our biggest location to date and the feedback has been terrific. Another exciting change has been in the Broadmead Village, where after twenty years we have just recently relocated within the mall beside the breezeway. This is a brand new restaurant and already our customers' loyalty and positive feedback has exceeded our expectations. Our Hillside and Langford locations will also be renovating within the coming year and will give our four lower island locations a similar modern look and feel. It truly is an exciting time for the Romeo's family and we hope our amazing customers will be right there with us for the ride.
