Dimitri Mavrikos and his two brothers, Steve and George, came to Victoria from Vancouver with the dream of opening their restaurant. Their goal was to open a restaurant that not only offers excellent food but great service and a fun casual atmosphere as well. They wanted a place that felt like home and in the summer of 1974, Romeo's was established.
Their primary focus was creating signature pizzas and pastas from unique recipes and techniques that had been passed down the family for generations. It was these staples that propelled the new restaurant into popularity and helped create a passionate local following. The menus also included a variety of popular local dishes, such as steaks, chicken, veal, burgers, and salads, as well as many original dishes from their homeland, Greece. Delivery and takeout also proved to be an extremely popular option as the local market responded enthusiastically.
The first Romeo's opened on Hillside Avenue and was warmly embraced by the people of Victoria. It was an instant success, and very shortly after, we opened a second location downtown on Johnson Street. This location would prove to be popular for lunch and dinner and is still remembered fondly for the fun-filled late-night meals and crowds. In the years that followed, the Mavrikos brothers branched out and opened more locations on Vancouver Island by adhering to the same philosophy that had brought them success in the beginning. With the help of their growing young families and new franchisees Nick & Chris Kamaretsos, the company grew into where it is today.
We pride ourselves on offering great food and service at a reasonable price. Our pizza and pasta recipes continue to stand the test of time and have garnered many awards and accolades over the years.
It is also an exciting time for the Romeo's family as we transition into the next chapter by opening up new and remodeled locations. In April of 2012, we returned to the downtown core with our location on the corner of Blanshard and Fisgard Street. This is our biggest location to date with lots of free parking spaces.
Other exciting changes have been made with our restaurants, in the Broadmead Village we relocated in the mall beside the breezeway in the spring of 2014. Our original Hillside location went through extensive renovations of their own in the fall of 2014. Our Langford location completed their renovations in the spring of 2015 to keep the look and feel similar as we enter into a new phase for our restaurant group. We have received a ton of positive feedback and thank our loyal customers for decades of support.
Romeo’s prides itself as a family restaurant. For us, family means valuing diversity and inclusion for both the employees and the customers.
